One-year (two semesters) Post
Graduate Diploma Course in Tea management (PGDTM) has been running smoothly
since 1995. The Fifteenth (17th) batch is going to start from
1.8.2011.
100% Placement record of the past students
Placement record of the students
of PGDTM course has been impressive over the years. Even in this year of
recession, we expect 100% placement of our students. The candidates get
placement in Tea gardens as Assistant Managers, as well as Sales Executives in
Agro Chemical Companies and Tea broker houses. Our students are also placed in
banks, insurance companies and other organizations. In addition to salaries,
the employees in tea garden are usually provided with facilities like
residence-cum-bungalow, electricity, cooking gas, on-duty vehicle, servants
etc.

Intake capacity:
35 (including 2 students from other SAARC
countries).
Course Fee:
Course fee of Rs. 40,000/-
(rupees forty thousand only) [Rs. 50,000/- (Indian Currency) in case of
candidates from other SAARC countries] is payable in two equal installments,
the first at the time of admission and the second one before enrolment for the
first Semester examination. Such fee shall cover only tuition fee. The students
will have free access to the library of the department. Registration fee,
Examination fee etc. are charged as per the University regulations. Other
expenses e.g., cost of preparation of project reports, dry and wet specimens,
herbarium, practical exercise books, visit to research centre, kits, dress,
photocopy of course materials are to be borne by the candidates themselves.
However, to and fro rail fare (single fare double journey) towards visit to
Tocklai Experimental Station, Assam or UPASI Tea Research Foundation, Tamil
Nadu is provided by the University.
Duration:
One Year (two Semesters) including intensive garden
training. Session : August to July
Selection procedure:
Written Test and Oral Interview.
Eligibility:
Any Graduate of the University of North Bengal or
any other recognized University in any discipline including Agriculture is
eligible to apply.
Facilities / Infrastructural support:
Stipend: Stipend is available for SC/ST
and OBC students
Hostel accommodation: Limited accommodation
facilities for men and women student.
EVALUATION
Evaluation is based on
continuous assessment, university examination at the end of each Semester and
comprehensive viva-voce. After satisfactory completion of the course, Grades
are awarded on the basis of performance in the examinations.
Library: Good collection of books and
periodicals on tea and other plantation crops, CD-ROM Search, internet
services, access to UGC-INFLIBNET data, full text database and services of the
University library through internet.
Audio Visual devices: Students are taught with the
help of OHP, Slide projectors and LCD projectors. Photocopier facilities are
also available in the Department.
Computer training
Department has own computer
laboratory with internet facilities, where the students get hands-on-training.
Laboratories: Soil testing (Tea
Board approved), tea museum comprising of herbarium collections of tea, shade
& weeds; collection of insects, manures, fertilizers etc.
Experimental fields in the
University campus: There are experimental as well as commercial plots of 40 acres with tea
plantation within the university campus.
Practical components of
Teaching:
Tea garden training: Students are taken to
different tea gardens of Terai, Dooars, Darjeeling, Assam and South India
including the tea garden of North Bengal University for practical field
training.
One-month residential tea garden
training: Every year the Consultative Committee of Planters’ Associations arranges
one-month residential training for each student in different tea gardens of
Terai, Dooars and Darjeeling. Free Board and Lodging are provided by Tea
gardens. During their one month stay in tea gardens, they are acquainted with
the teal tea life, and gather knowledge about various agronomic practices and
manufacturing process.
Visit to tea research centre: Students are taken to
UPASI Tea Research Foundation (Tamil Nadu) and Tocklai Experimental Station
(Assam) for enriching their knowledge about latest researches in tea.
Future Programme :
Introduction of a M.Sc. course in Tea
Science from the next Academic session is
in the pipeline. Action on this matter has already been initiated.
